A formal greeting to Ogun Balendjo, General of God’s Army.

I am Ogun Balendjo, and I come to the Olive Tree.
I come to shake the hands of the sick and lift up the fallen.
I am Ogun Balendjo.

— Traditional song honoring Ogun Balendjo

This invocation announces not conquest, but arrival—the arrival of a protector, healer, and commander whose wars are fought for life itself.

Who Is Ogun Balendjo?

Ogun Balendjo is the head of the Ogun, or Nago, Division and stands among the most loved and respected mysteries in Vodou. He is a General of God’s Army, a seasoned warrior whose strength is tempered by compassion, discipline, and wisdom earned through countless battles.

Often described as a “retired general,” Ogun Balendjo seeks peace and quiet when possible—but this softness is deceptive. When injustice rises or evil threatens the vulnerable, Ogun Balendjo answers without hesitation. His power remains absolute.

Ogun Balendjo and the Nago Nation

Ogun Balendjo leads the Nago nation, a spiritual army of warriors devoted to defeating evil wherever it takes root. The Nago are not reckless crusaders; they are disciplined, purposeful, and unwavering. Under Ogun Balendjo’s command, force is applied only where necessary, and always in service of justice.

Ogun Balendjo despises injustice and slavery. Yet more than that, he holds a special fury for those who exploit the weak, prey upon the innocent, or profit from suffering. Against such enemies, he is relentless.

Warrior and Healer

Unlike many warlike spirits, Ogun Balendjo is also a great healer. He treats disease as an invading army—methodically identifying it, surrounding it, and driving it out. His healing work is martial in nature: strategic, uncompromising, and effective.

For this reason, Ogun Balendjo is frequently consulted not only for battle, but for restoration. Where chaos has taken root in the body or the spirit, he restores order.

Family and Sacred Companions

Ogun Balendjo is deeply rooted in family and relationship. He is married to Ezili, and is often accompanied by his sister Ofelia Balendjo. This familial bond reinforces his identity as a protector—not only of nations, but of households and children.

His presence is firm, paternal, and reassuring.

Feast Day, Colors, and Offerings

Ogun Balendjo’s feast day is July 25th.

Sacred associations include:

  • Colors: Blue and white

  • Offerings: Red wine and cigars

  • Sacred implement: A machete adorned with a blue-and-white bandanna tied around the handle

These offerings honor both his warrior nature and his refined, measured character.

When to Call Upon Ogun Balendjo

Ogun Balendjo is consulted in matters involving:

  • Defeating enemies and overcoming opposition

  • Breaking through obstacles and blockages

  • Creating or finding employment

  • Healing illness and restoring vitality

  • Defending children and the vulnerable

He is especially present where protection and healing must occur at the same time.

Ogun Balendjo at Our Temple

Within the Temple of the Machete, Ogun Balendjo represents the ideal of strength guided by compassion. He is proof that the blade need not be cruel to be effective, and that true warriors protect life rather than glorify destruction.

He stands beside Belie Belcan not as thunder beside thunder, but as shield beside storm—the general who heals the land after the battle is won.

Prayer for Saint James of Matamoros

Oh glorious Apostle, St. James, who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart was chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony in Gethsemane;

Thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory: obtain for us strength and consolation in the unending warfare of this life, that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus, we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive the victor's crown in heaven.

Amen.
